LUKAVAC CEMENT FACTORY PARTICIPATED AT THE PLATFORM FOR LOW CARBON DEVELOPMENT OF TUZLA AND POSAVA CANTONS

On May 18th 2021, the conference “Platform for Low Carbon Development of Tuzla and Posavina Cantons” was held in Tuzla where our company was represented by technology engineer Tima Omerović Smajlović. On that occasion, she presented the topic “Waste as an energy source in the industry” and she described one of the successful ways of waste management in our country on the example of the use of alternative fuels in the Lukavac Cement Factory.

Participation at this conference shows that Lukavac Cement is a relevant factor in BiH when it comes to the use of alternative fuels in the cement industry, environmental protection and modern technologies.

Engineer Omerović Smajlović especially referred to the fact that modern cement plants use alternative fuels, not waste. Among the key factors for the successful implementation of this process are the identification of alternative fuels according to the established standard, finding suppliers of these fuels, which are unfortunately lacking in BiH, as well as defining quality parameters and quality control. She emphasized that large investments are necessary and therefore the Lukavac Cement Factory has additionally invested over 5 million euros to improve the system of using alternative fuels in its production in the last 3 years. This resulted in a significant reduction in the use of fossil fuels, a reduction in CO₂ emissions and many other benefits. Omerović Smajlović also pointed out that modernly equipped cement plants play an important role in the waste disposal chain, because the use of alternative fuels, generated by waste-processing which has a significant calorific value, directly contributes to reducing the need for landfill disposal.

The FBiH Low Carbon Development Platform, organized by the Energis and the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund, is an important long-term project that brings together key actors such as representatives of government, educational institutions, international organizations, embassies, private and public sector.
